Vogue CS in EnglishInstagram Top 10: Sweater Weather
Sean Krebs6. 10. 2019
Nothing says fall more than a cozy sweater. As the season officially began, fabulous knitwear popped up all over Paris – and even made a guest appearance in Hollywood, too.
Ali MacGraw, as Jenny Cavilleri in the 1970 film, Love Story, is famous for spouting the line, “Love means never having to say you’re sorry”. She’s also famous for helping to put turtleneck sweaters on the map. Ali wears a turtleneck sweater, in various colors, in at least ten different scenes throughout the movie. She wears them with peacoats, plaid kilts, cigarette pants, hats (both crocheted and fur), and even under a Harvard sweatshirt (borrowed from Ryan O’Neal). Ali spent years working for legendary editor Diana Vreeland and as a stylist for fashion photographer Melvin Sokolsky before becoming an actress. So, although there are two costume designers credited for their work on Love Story, you can’t help but feel that Ali herself had a major influence on what she wore since each item feels distinctly her own.
It is a look that still resonates today. Celebrities and influencers were spotted sporting not only fine-gauge turtlenecks like Ali’s, but sweaters of all varieties – including plush jumpers, chunky knits, and logo’ed pullovers - all over Instagram this week.
Felicia Akerstrom is a modern day Jenny Cavilleri layering a second sweater over the shoulders of her black turtleneck and center-parting her long, dark hair. Aimee Song also doubled-up on knitwear, in bright yellow, while strolling Paris’s 17 arrondissement. Constance Jablonski made a statement in a Stella McCartney sweater from the Forces of Nature collection, which was a collaboration between the designer and Everything Is Illuminated’s best-selling author, Jonathan Safran Foer. Viktoria Rader and Jennie Kim both opted for the same Chanel red sweater with distinct double-c’s. Millie Mackintosh showed off her legs by pairing her oversized knit with a tiny mini skirt, while Tracee Ellis Ross looked pretty (and cozy) in pink. Andreas Weinås gave us his best Blue Steel in a classic cable-knit pullover from Swedish brand Blugiallo. It was #doubletrouble on the set of Emily in Paris, the new television series from Sex and the City creator Darren Star, when Lily Collins posed along the Seine with Zoe Bouch in matching rainbow-bright sweaters. And Selma Blair was comfy and chic in an Aran knit look with some fuzzy friends at the H&M x Sesame Street event for the Yellow Feather Fund in Los Angeles.
