Instagram Top 10: Plaid

Sean Krebs14. 10. 2019
Whether you call it plaid or tartan, you will want to check out the best Instagrams of the week featuring the coolest patterns of the new fall season.
With Halloween right around the corner, there is no doubt you’ll be seeing more than one “Cher” partying in her signature yellow plaid suit. The look has been an omnipresent Halloween costume ever since Alicia Silverstone strutted the hallways of her fictional Beverly Hills high school as Cher Horowitz in Clueless, the teen flick (and beloved cult classic) from 1995. Another milestone in the history of plaid occurred just a few years before that, when Marc Jacobs presented his groundbreaking – and, ultimately, career-making – spring 1993 collection for Perry Ellis. Heavily inspired by the Seattle grunge music scene, Marc sent supermodels Christy Turlington, Helena Christensen and Naomi Campbell down the runway in various iterations of Kurt Cobain’s iconic plaid flannel shirt.
Tartan, as plaid is called in the United Kingdom, first made its appearance in the Scottish Highlands in the 1500s. Queen Victoria was so fond of the fabric that she “decked Balmoral in it” according to Tartan: Romancing the Plaid, the book by Jeffrey Banks and Doria de la Chapelle, published by Rizzoli in 2015. Tartan, plaid and check patterns aren’t just popular for Gaelic kilts and private school uniforms, they are also favored by the fashion flock - as seen on Instagram this week.
Maisie Williams and her boyfriend, Reuben Selby, held hands on the front row of Thom Browne’s Paris show in coordinated plaid looks from the designer. Elsa Hosk was also at Thom Browne, smouldering in an enviable pastel coat. Laura Kim of Monse and Oscar de la Renta shopped Lucy Sparrow’s Delicatessen on 6 (a pop-up art installation of 30,000 hand stitched felt items) in a Monse check blazer. Kayleigh Li posed in “an old suit, new style” from Les Coyotes de Paris and Laura Bailey wore her Shrimps tartan skirt with a bright yellow sweater. Tamu McPherson donned Louis Vuitton for the brand’s show in the courtyard of the Louvre. Giovanna Engelbert wished her husband, Oscar, a happy birthday by posting a picture of him that was also a love letter to plaid. Prince Charles toured the northeastern coast of Scotland in a tartan kilt while Kitty Cash was at Chateau de Saran in a much-shorter hemline (paired with killer Chanel gold thigh-high boots). And Halsey had us all missing summer (yes, already) by wearing a Burberry bikini, in the brand’s ubiquitous check, on a yacht somewhere very warm.

“Tartan looks wonderful with everything but wearing tartan with tartan is best,” Vivienne Westwood declared to the Financial Times when she unveiled her collaboration with Burberry last year. Vogue CS is mad for plaid. Below, a culling of the best plaid clothing and accessories available now.
