Instagram Top 10: Halloween

Sean Krebs5. 11. 2019
Celebrities stepped out and stepped up their game for Halloween this year. Yes, there were witches and ghouls aplenty but a majority of A-listers (and their children) couldn’t resist dressing up as one another.
What do Nina Dobrev, Poppy Delevingne, Jameela Jamil and Harper Beckham have in common? All of them went as Billie Eilish for Halloween last week. Fellow singer Anne-Marie even went so far as to recreate the 17-year-old’s look from her performance at a Chanel party on Shelter Island this summer, right down to the ankle boot on her left foot. Maleficent also proved to be very popular this year as La La Anthony, Halima Aden, Eiza Gonzalez and Chrissy Teigen were each spotted sporting the evil fairy’s signature curved horns.

Halloween costumes have been referencing pop culture since the 1930’s and the idea of dressing up in disguise on October 31st originated in Ireland and Scotland in the 1600’s as a way to celebrate the end of the harvest season. Celebrating was exactly what many celebrities had in mind this week as these Halloween highlights from Instagram clearly illustrate.
Gemma Chan channeled Uma Thurman’s character from Pulp Fiction (Mia Wallace) as she got cozy with her Marvel’s The Eternals co-star Richard Madden. Amber Valletta was made up as Twiggy from her American Vogue cover - lensed by the legendary Richard Avedon in 1967. Meanwhile, Normani paid homage to Naomi Campbell by recreating iconic images of the Azzedine Alaïa-clad supermodel originally shot by Herb Ritts in 1991 (and Naomi approved by promptly posting them to her own account). Liza Koshy was Anna Wintour, complete with bobbed wig, black sunglasses and Chanel tweed. Ciara and husband Russell Wilson totally nailed their tribute to Beyoncé and Jay-Z as they posed in front of a portrait of Barack and Michelle Obama (which stood-in for Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa). It was a match made in Met Gala heaven when #minijaredleto (Jasper) and #minikyliejenner (Stormi Webster) glammed it up for their parents. Kendall Jenner kept “the Halloween birthday party alive for mom” when she celebrated her 24th as a forest fairy with not one, but two white horses (and Leonardo DiCaprio). And Vogue CS’s May cover star, Gigi Hadid, partied with her friend Kenny as Jim Carrey’s Stanley Ipkiss from The Mask in a yellow Iceberg suit and perfect green contouring.

Halloween as a year-round trend? Jeremy Scott at Moschino says yes! His Resort 2020 collection was inspired by horror movies and included Suki Waterhouse (channeling Drew Barrymore from Scream) in a pumpkin face sweater. Previously, Miuccia Prada printed images of Frankenstein and his bride on dresses and tops for her Fall 2019 show and sent her models out with plaited hair à la Wednesday Addams. Still not convinced? Well, Vogue CS hopes the following items won’t scare you away from the idea.
