No item of clothing transcends time and trends more than a pair of denim jeans. Versatile and reliable, they are a wardrobe staple for all – including the savviest celebrities and influencers.
Fashion history was made the night Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears showed up at the 2001 American Music Awards wearing matching head-to-toe denim including a denim cowboy hat for Justin and a denim and rhinestone purse for Britney. Luckily for us, Justin sartorial style has evolved over the years and his collaboration with Levi’s, currently in its third season, is full of covetable items (including a sherpa-lined trucker jacket with denim sleeves). Justin isn’t the only musician with a denim collection. Dua Lipa launched her own line with Pepe Jeans this past September and a picture of her wearing a pair of her high-rise jeans (paired with a cropped angora sweater) in London last week has garnered over 1.5 million likes on Instagram.
The first pair of denim jeans was manufactured in 1873 by Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis but it wasn’t until the 1950s that jeans became fashionable to wear outside the workplace. Fashion icon Jane Birkin basically spent the entire decade of the 1970s in high-waisted, wide-leg flared jeans. And the craze for designer jeans in the 1980s made Calvin Klein a household name. Last week, denim popped up all over Instagram.
Natalia Vodianova twinned with her 13-year-old daughter Neva in super-faded jeans (and red jackets) in Sochi, Russia while fellow supermodel Cindy Crawford had a “cozy morning at home” in hers. Angela Simmons dressed up her denim jeggings with a tweed jacket and ropes of pearls at a luncheon for The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program. Constance Arnoult wore a Canadian tuxedo (as denim-on-denim is affectionately known) from Italian brand Please in Paris. In Zurich, Lisa Hahnbück gave her denim puffer and denim skinnies combo a pop of color with a pair of fuchsia satin Christian Louboutin stilettos. Gisele Bündchen paired her (very Jane Birkin) wide-leg flares with a Dior belt for a Dior Skincare event in Shanghai and Rania Fawaz wore a denim bustier for the Dior Backstage Pop-Up at Dubai Mall. Marc Jacobs sported indigo denim from Celine and posted about the praise he received from a New York City sanitation worker who told him, “Love that outfit, man. You go flex for those bitches!” And Kim Hersov had this to say about her Junya Watanabe patchwork jeans, “They are jeans with character. I love that they are quirky and comfortable and can be dressed up or down.”

“Y’all still wearing jeans?” Luka Sabbat famously tweeted last fall to much uproar and confusion among those who follow such things (i.e. most of us). The answer was yes then – and it’s still yes now – and even Luka himself is currently starring in a denim campaign for PacSun. Here, Vogue CS offers a selection of the best denim items on the market.
